Hiking the Ausangate Trek is an experience reserved for travelers who want to get to the white skirts of snow of the tallest mountain in southern Peru.  

The journey takes us through different communities and changing landscapes: the andean plateau, mountain passes, valleys and through the jungle.

Although there route has its altitude challenges, there are some great relaxation points and natural hot springs for one to truly enjoy the adventure.

Our journey is lead by experienced guides, cooks and porters that will be taking care of you beyond your needs. Our meals are deliciously recognized because we design them with our Main Chef. Don’t settle for average dishes during the journey!

TRIP ITINERARY

This five-day trek through the Cordillera Vilcanota’s rugged snow-capped peaks offers spectacular scenery and a unique encounter with life in the Andean Plateau.

Day 1: Cusco to Tinqui to Upis Campsite

Ride: driver & private shuttle.

Your private shuttle will pick you up from Cusco and take you to Tinqui Village (our starting point for the trek and meeting point with the rest of the service team.

On the drive to Tinqui, at the foot of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, we’ll pass through several traditional towns such as Urcos, Cattca, and Ocangate.

The hike will lead us across a plain of grassy meadows below the jagged stone flanks of Mount Ausungate 6,350m (20,800ft), the highest snow peak in Southern Peru.

After trekking for approximately six hours total (considering stops along the way for lunch and rest), we arrive to the hot springs of Upis, our first campsite.

From here, we ́ll get some marvelous views of Mount Ausangate at the end of the valley.

Day 2: Upis Campsite to Lake Pukacocha Campsite

Rise and shine! The day will welcome you with a healthy and natural Chef designed breakfast! This will help you get all the energy you need to start off todays hike!

Today we start the hike towards the Arapa Pass at 4,850m (15,900ft).

Tip: you can take a small stone in your pack and leave it when you reach the mountain pass. This practice is a tradition. Your guide will give you more information about this.

From the pass, we ́ll enjoy wonderful views, not only of Mount Ausangate, but also of many other nearby snow-capped peaks. We continue down the corridor past a number of small, multi-colored lagoons until we reach the largest of them, Lake Vinococha, where we ́ll have our lunch for the day.

A short walk in the afternoon brings us to the illustrious, red-colored Lake Pucacocha, where our campsite for the night awaits.

From this location, we ́ll get a dramatic, close-up view of Mount Ausangate.

Day 3: Lake Pukacocha Campsite to Uchuy Finaya Campsite

Rise and shine! The day will welcome you with a healthy and natural Chef designed breakfast! This will help you get all the energy you need to start off todays hike!

In the morning, we make a short ascent to our second pass of Apuchata at 4,900 m. (16,000ft). Here we’ll be able to see the turquoise Laguna Ausangate Q’ocha below.

From here, we climb to the Palomani pass at 5,200m (17,000ft), the highest of our journey.

We’ll enjoy fantastic views of Ausangate Mountain and the Vilcanota Mountain Range.

After approximately 2 hours of walking down into a valley, we arrive to our incredibly beautiful campsite at Uchuy Finaya.

Day 4: Uchuy Finaya Campsite to Lake Minaparayoc Campsite

Rise and shine! The day will welcome you with a healthy and natural Chef designed breakfast! This will help you get all the energy you need to start off todays hike!

Today we begin hiking alongside a stream until we reach the Valley of the Viscachas, named for the gorgeous furry animals that can be found here.

We’ll get to the small community of Campa, where we’ll be able to see the majestic snow-capped peaks of Puka Punta and Tres Picos Mountains.

Upon reaching the final pass at Q’omer Q’ocha, we have lunch among the wild vicuñas and picturesque lakes.

A short downhill walk brings us to the mystical, Lake Minaparayoc, where we will camp along the shore.

Day 5: Lake Minaparayoc Campsite to Tinqui Town to Cusco

Rise and shine! The day will welcome you with a healthy and natural Chef designed breakfast! This will help you get all the energy you need to start off todays hike!

Our day begins with a downhill hike through the valley. On the way, we’ll be able to see many herds of grazing llamas and alpacas.

On the way, we’ll arrive to the gorgeous hot springs of Pacchanta where we can rest and enjoy a soak in the soothing thermal water.

Relaxed and refreshed, we continue hiking back to the small village of Tinqui, where will have our lunch for the day.

After lunch we’ll board our shuttle and head back to Cusco.
