Salkantay Mountain

Salkantay is a snow-capped mountain located in Cusco. It is the highest peak of the Vilcabamba mountain range with an elevation of +20,500 feet. “As a range highpoint in deeply incised terrain, it is the second most topographically prominent peak in the country, after Huascarán.” (Wikipedia).

So, what makes Salkantay Mountain so interesting?
We have three important reasons:

  1. Close proximity to Cusco
  2. A less crowded way to get to Machu Picchu
  3. Salkantay Mountain Activities

1. Close Proximity to Cusco

Salkantay is located about 40 miles northwest from Cusco and is the highest peak of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. The road is paved during most of the journey. Afterward, it becomes a rural road that is very well maintained. The easy and fast access to this location makes it perfect for visitors that have arrived in Cusco.

Although the access is fairly straightforward, please take into consideration that roads in the Andes are filled with zig-zags and a good vehicle and driver are truly recommended. Also, consider that there aren’t many (or none) public transports available for you to hop on and get to or from Salkantay-Cusco.

2. A less crowded way to get to Machu Picchu

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Tour begins in the Sacred Valley, on the east side of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. This trail is usually overbooked even months before departure dates, especially during the months of June and July.

The Salkantay Trek Tour, on the other hand, begins on the other side of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. This tour starts and heads uphill towards the Salkantay Mountain Pass. Afterward, it heads downhill to the Santa Teresa Town. From here it’s possible to hike or to hop on a train that heads to Aguas Calientes.

3. Salkantay Mountain Activities

Salkantay Mountain is surrounded by a unique landscape. We, at BMQ Travel, have been operating exclusive hiking tours and biking tours.

The hiking tours are designed for travelers who want to experience hiking to the Salkantay Mountain and Lake Huamantay but don’t want to continue towards Machu Picchu. Contact us for more information.

Our exclusive Salkantay biking tours are designed for expert or experienced bikers. The trip begins the uphill hike towards the mountain pass. Don’t worry, our service team and porters will take care of the heavy gear.

After catching our breath and enjoying the majestic view of the mountain and of Huamantay Lake, we begin the bike ride. It’s a downhill ride that has several different sections. Gravel, single-tracks, plains and even some icy parts make this experience unique.

Salkantay Mountain is becoming every year more popular. The views are amazing and it complements perfectly with most pre-arranged itineraries. Contact us for more information regarding this destination or others.
