Update: January 02, 2019

There has been an update (December 20, 2018) on the regulations for the Inca Trail Permits 2019 to Machu Picchu.

Starting January 1st, 2019, the following new regulations will apply:

  1. Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu will be sold by entry time (by hours). This entering times are stated as a starting time to enter. You may also enter at later times with that ticket. You will not be able to enter at times before the entry time.
  2. Boarding the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu will require you to show your ticket with the entry hour. Tickets with entry hours for later shifts will not be allowed to board the bus and will have to wait for their entry time-slot. This will help making less crowded the entrance at Machu Picchu.

1. Inca Trail permits availability: things to know

  1. Given the high demand of hiking the Inca Trail by travelers all around the world and high  infrastructure costs of maintaining the trail, the Peruvian Culture Institute set only 500 permits available each day of the year. Considering that each traveler may take with them guides and porters, the actual number of permits available for travelers comes down to between 200 and 300.
  2. May and June are the months with more demand of permits. They are the fastest selling months of the year. Sometimes selling out permits in just a month.
  3. Permits go on sale every year for the next year. Usually near the end of the year.
  4. There are two main seasons in Cusco and Machu Picchu. The dry season starts on the second week of April to the second week of November. The rainy season, on the other hand, runs from Mid-November to Mid-April.

2. Inca Trail permits official site and real-time availability

the Inca trail permits are sold officially by authorized travel agencies. Don’t worry, we have this under control. We are glad to let you know real-time about the booking status and Inca Trail permits availability. Just contact us here

3. How to book your Inca Trail Permits:

  1. Know if your agency will include (farm) you to other groups or even with other operators. Ask them if they ARE or AREN’T tour operators. When you book directly with the tour operator (like us at BMQ Travel) you’ll be able to talk to the people that will be with you in Peru. Customer satisfaction is key for tour operators like us.
  2. Use a trust-worthy booking agency. We recommend two things: book with a trusted operator like us and plan with them the whole trip (including the departure date for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu). This way there will be no need to re-purchase the Inca Trail permits. We accept PayPal and Credit Cards to make the payments are secure and expedited (vs money transfer, which we also accept).
  3. Booking is non refundable or transferable. If you want to change your departure date, a new permit will need to be purchased. Beware agencies claiming they have a “waiting list” or “cancelation list” because its false. Inca Trail permits availability is seen on real-time.
  4. The booking process requires two things: 1. your passport details (permits are booked with a name and passport number) and 2. the deposit for the permit. MAKE SURE YOUR INFORMATION IS EXACTLY AS IT IS IN THE PASSPORT! There are several control points along the way so make sure you provide the correct information.
  5. Personal porters: with the knowledgeable advisory of a travel expert (contact one here), you should decide if you will need a porter to help you carry your backpack. Usually travelers have two packs: one day-pack and one full-pack. If you’re not a frequent hiker we truly recommend you this option. It will let you ENJOY more and worry less.
  6. Students: ISIC (International Student Cards) are entitled to a discount. Discounts range at about $30. Discounts may vary. At BMQ Travel we like to encourage student travelers and offer a $50 discount. Let us know if this discount applies to you.

4. Inca Trail permits 2018

Inca Trail permits for 2018 are mostly gone. Please ask us if you want to review a departure date availability. We recommend booking the 2D/1N Day Inca Trail Machu Picchu Hike Tour because availability is greater.

5. Inca trail permits 2019

Inca Trail permits for 2019 (next year) will begin sales in October. For a few years permits began sales on january. This changed last year when sales for permits began on October. Please click here to sign up for up dates regarding the Inca Trail permits for 2019

6. Inca trail permits last minute

Unfortunately, Inca Trail permits for 2018 are mostly gone. Any desire for last minute bookings, please ask us to review a departure date availability. We recommend booking the 2D/1N Day Inca Trail Machu Picchu Hike Tour because availability is greater.

7. Inca trail permits cost/price

Prices for the Classic 4 day trek IN GROUP SERVICE (not private like the tours we offer and service)  are generally ranging between USD $550 to 1,500 per person. This includes entrance fees, buses and train tickets. Like

Take in consideration that these prices can more than double if you book with a travel agency outside Peru. How do we know this? Because we also operate tours from big and international travel agencies.

8. Which treks require permits?

Great question! There are two Inca Trail routes. The “Classic” 4D/3N Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and the “Express” 2D/1N Inca Trail to Machu. Inca Trail permits availability is more demanding and requires more booking anticipation for the Classic trek than for the Express trek. The Express trek allows hikers to trek the last day of the Inca Trail.
